I use a dynamic microphone without preamp but a 10:1 audio transfomer directly into the camcorder audio input. That allows to capture even the hi-rev engine noise without distortion.

The mic is stuck in left side behind the driver seat, that means out of the wind but pretty close to the side exit exhaust. Only drawback is besides the engine noise it also captures the diff whine and on highways the wheels hopping over the metal lane divider buttons.

    Gert,

I LOVE the sound! How did you get it to record the engine noises, but very little wind noise?
