  • CHP VIN Check

    Hi,

On Tuesday I'm taking my 7 to the CHP for the VIN check verification.... for those of you that have been through this before, is it okay to drive the car to their station? also, what paperwork should I be bringing? I haven't taken the car to the Smog Ref yet.... hopefully I'm not doing this backwards.

    Thanks,
    Scott

I had a temporary operating permit when I took mine to the CHP, without the temp permit I don't think it is legal on the road.

If you go to the DMV and get a temp permit, don't get a one day one but at least 30 days as it may take awhile to get your smog appointment.

Someplace on this website the entire process is posted.

My recollection is that I went to the CHP first to get the VIN Number assigned, I used the chassis number that is on the pedal box and also on the ID plate that Caterham provides.

If you don't use that they will assign a unigue number and put it on the car someplace.

On your first trip to DMV you should have recieved a number that is to be attached visibly in the window. If the number is "8" that means that until august (the 8th month) you can drive the car on the street while getting it registered. The number 6 would mean june, etc.

I never took my car to DMV. Would recommend doing the same.
