  • Registering An Out-of-State 7 in CA?

    Hi All: Been trying to wrap my head around the various SB100 and SB1578 provisions. Have read the resource document here and at the NCKCC site. And I think I have read all the threads here. I seem to recall reading somewhere that once a 7 has been registered in another state, it is not possible to bring it into CA and register it under either SB 100 or SB 1578. Is that true?

    I ask because I have two opportunities to purchase low mileage 7 replicas, and both are pretty interesting, but only if I have a prayer of getting them registered. I already have my DMV appointment scheduled "just in case."

          I wouldn't wait for your appointment unless it's in the first two hours of Jan. 2 2006. Just get in line before they open and you should be able to be seen before your appointment. Those numbers COULD go pretty fast this year.

            Appreciate the advice Steve. I think DMV is closed on 1/2; it's the holiday. First day of business in the new year I'm pretty sure is 1/3. My appointment is for 8:30, and I plan to be in line early as well. But my primary problem still needs to be addressed.

                SB100 is a smog exemption. To get a car registered, you have to get a smog inspection. In your case you use SB100 to exempt your car from smog requirements because it "resembles" a car made prior to 1970 (specifically a 1962 Lotus Super 7). SB100 does a one time smog inspection for it's database to track SB100 exempted cars. You can't fail this inspection, it's just numbers collecting. This one time smog inspection will suffice for the required smog inspection for your registration.

                Because the SB100 law was modified to allow existing cars instead of just new cars to get SB100 sequence numbers, they all go on the first business day of the year, mostly due to Cobra kit owners. You've already stated that you will get there early, which is a good idea. Once there, note that the DMV has to make a call to Sacramento to reserve your sequence number, which you get in the mail later. You only need your VIN (English or California VIN will do) to allocate a SB100 sequence number. It would be a good idea to get a temporary permit and have the car there at the DMV in case they want to verify the VIN.

                I would make a prior visit to the DMV to make sure that they know how to do SB100's (the call to Sacramento).

                Another requirement is proof of ownership, either a title. or the statement of origin from Caterham.

                The final requirement is a California VIN, you make an appointment with a Highway Patrol station that puts 2 VIN id's (and supposedly a 3rd hidden one) on your car. In my case, they taped one VIN on the outside of the body just to the left of the steering wheel so that the side curtain would hide it, and the other one inside the engine compartment next to the existing English VIN.

                Some owners have stated that they got a saftey inspection, mainly that your brake lights and turn signals work, but I didn't get one of these.

                      Specify the year as 1961....When I got mine they were giving all sb100 cars that year by default anyway....You do NOT want any year after 1966. That is the first year that requiered exhaust emmision control in CA.

                          I am not sure if SB100 complicates the matter but for regular registrations any car older than 30 years (AFAIK with a future limit of 1976) is now smog exempt. But maybe I am getting confused because of rumored, proposed, discussed, enacted, amended and rescinded bills. Anyway, my 1968 car was never invited to a smog check. Now that is a terrible thought.....

                            I got my SB100 number the first year they were doing it.

                            The DMV called Sacramento and I was given the sequence number immediatly. I also received confirmation of the number by mail in about one week.

                            At the time I did not need my car at the DMV only the correct paperwork. See the DMV website or other posts to see what you need.

                            I asked for and got a temporary permit to allow me to drive the car to the CHP for the inspection. They offered a one day permit but I talked them into 30 days because I had to take it to 'wheel alignment' etc. I then got extenstions to the temp for about 3 months.

                            Things may have changed now but at the time no one really seemed to know exactly what was needed.

                            Rob, the year of the engine was assigned at the smog referee station, not by the DMV.

                            They asked me what year I wanted it to be and I said 1960.
