  • Timing Belt Sander

I checked today why my timing belt was whipping in idle. Found it loose and the tensioner pulley at the end of the adjustment slot.
A closer look showed the timing belt (I guess together with road dust) has sanded off away about 30/1000 of my adjustable aluminum pulleys.

So I guess I should better replace them but at GBP195 that is quite painful. Any idea for a domestic source instead of Burton Power and Kent Cam? This is a 2.0 ZX1 Zetec from a Contour.

Sorry, No idea about a domestic source.

But you might want to consider having a hard anodize plating done on the next set, if aluminum.

      CFM has them http://www.c-f-m.com/performancepart...?idproduct=100
      as do Esslinger http://www.esslingeracing.com/zetec/...zetecindex.htm

I've bought parts from CFM with no issues, but know nothing about Esslinger.

I think I have the Esslinger pulleys and have no known issues with them. But then I don't drive in the dust storms you do.

Thanks Randy, that is what I was looking for.
Esslinger mentions ZX2 and ZX3. CFM only ZX3
The Kent Cams that I have are listed for all Zetec E models which should include my ancient ZX1 motor.

That would lead me to believe that the Esslinger and CFM pulleys should also fit my cams.

          Any idea?

My own experience is with ZX2 and ZX3 engines. I have no idea whether the ZX1 cam pulley attachments are the same.

I think (I hope) I found the answer. Looks like member "Budlite" on the 7s.com forum has the Esslinger ones on his ZX1. Maybe I pay them a visit today.

Yay! Esslinger still had a set, but it may have been their last one. They are out of the Zetec business for many years.
So I got the pair for $120 plus tax. Normal price would have been $280 plus tax and the ones from KentCam $320 plus shipping from the UK.

Not a bad deal. Now I hope I get the heavy torx bolts off without removing the camshafts.

I finally got around to working on the car. But man, how I hate these Torx cam gear bolts. They were like welded in place. I finally got the intake side loose but holding the cam hex with a wrench by hand just did not work. I ended up using the alignment slot tool to hold it. I tried the same for the exhaust side, only to break off a piece of the cam casting at the slot. While that is not fatal, I was really lucky that I found the broken off piece after a while sitting on the bellhousing. If it would have fallen into the oil passages or the valve spring wells I would have looked at an engine disassembly.

Then I went back to the wrenches on the cam hex and strapped two together with a hose clamp so that it was supported by the other cam. That held, but only to strip out the splines from the Torx bolt. Finally I welded a big 24mm nut the bolt front end and the combination of the heat and the long wrench got the bolt off. But now that bolts is fucked up and I have to wait for new bolts. This time I ordered ARP bolts with an external 12-point socket head.

I tried the Esslinger cam gears on and in principle they do fit. But unlike the ZX3 my engine has an alignment dowel on the mounting flange so I had to drill a hole into the new gears. It is kind of good that I got that far without damaging the engine (I hope) but somehow I am pissed off that everything is so difficult.

Looks like the end of one of my cams. I had wondered how somebody managed to do that. Mystery solved. Apparently, you're not alone. :)

Someplace in the instructions, either for the alignment tool or the cam gear removal, it says not to do that.

This assumes one reads the instructions.

I still have all of the parts from my 1st Duratec install, just waiting for some adventurous, frugal and mechanically adept owner who's ready to put their car on a diet.:-D

Oh no. I am not going to put such a pewter lump into my car.
