Where to get that ITG filter?

  • Where to get that ITG filter?

    I have the rounded basket shape ITG filter with the red plastic base on my car that needs to be replaced. But when I go to the ITG web site I see only the straight wall version with the 2 red bands and I suspect that will chafe with the bonnet cutout.

    Anybody knows what that type is that I have and where to get a new one? The pic may be misleading, since the filter is upside down with closing tabs are below and not visible.
    Well, the pic is anyway misleading because the engine has not been that clean for years.

    Gert, ITG refers to that style as a "domed" or "sausage" filter. Not sure if anyone in the US stocks that style, but they should be able to order one for you.

      Hi Gert,

      I would start by contacting either the Induction Technology Group (ITG) headquarters in jolly olde directly, or the ITG distributor on the West coast, Coast Fabrication in Huntington Beach, CA, as that's not too far away for you.

        I just looked at the US distributor's site that Sean linked to above and found the following:
        Most types of Megaflow filters are available in both the flat or dome-shape. A dome-shaped filter is referred to as "sausage". Sausage type filters must be special-ordered from the factory.

          Still should only take a few weeks to get. On the positive side, you can inform them that your application requires the filter to be oriented with the tabs down, so you can request they mark the foam so it reads appropriately, or maybe just have it left off. Maybe.

          edit -- Might be a good idea to get two, and keep one wrapped in plastic. I'm assuming these things don't deteriorate too badly if kept sealed in a cool dry environment. Another potential question for the manufacturer or distributor.

            Hey thanks guys, good info. I will give them a call.

            I got it as a kit with the throttle bodies, pump and regulator from Woody Harris long time ago.
            They filters are kind of pricey but I think having a spare one is a good idea. The old filter (7 years) is getting crumbly and already has a small hole.

            Or. I may rethink the arrangement and build a custom airbox with a more common filter. Got to think about that......I still have rolls of carbon fiber and Kevlar fabric somewhere and I got a CNC machine to make molds.

                Hm, might be possible. ITG makes a big fuss about the unique properties of the foam with different layers and such. I don't think I can just go and order a piece of foam from McMasterCarr. Or does ITG sell foam separately?
                The other problem might be the attachment. I have not looked closely but somehow the foam is crimped with the wire basket into the flange or maybe overmolded. I'll check it out.

                  I had an ITG filter protecting twin 40DCOEs on my old Alfa. During a dyno day, the car put out 127hp to the wheels. Curious how much power the filter absorbed, we removed it and did another run. Much to our surprise, the dyno now read 125hp. Reinstalling the ITG and running again, returned the power to 127hp. Now I'm not saying an ITG filter makes power, but it certainly does a damn good job not losing it. The only reason I am running a Pipercross on the Westfield is that it came with the kit from Raceline.

                    I went to the auto store and found an OEM filter that almost fits the bill, actually for that strange Chevy HHR. At 12 bucks sure cheaper than the ITG and even the K&N version is somewhat reasonable at $53.

                    I think I will just put the old ITG back on for the summer and look at the airbox as a fall project. I always wanted to have such a carbon fiber scoop ;-)
                    One thing that bothered me with the ITG anyway was that I had to tape off a third or it will suck in hot air from under the bonnet.

                      My understanding is that it's ozone that attacks the foam. My original lasted a good 5 years or so until it headed south. I replaced it w/ another at some expense (because w/ mine the foam element is not individually replaceable) and it lasted less than 2 years before exhibiting the crumbling that is characteristic w/ ozone degradation. The only thing I did differently is that I actually tried to maintain the 2nd one w/ that sticky foam goop that's supposed to be good for them. W/ the 1st one I'd just give it a squirt of WD40 and a wiping down from time to time. Go figure.

                        That is interesting. Actually I washed and re-oiled the filter at one time according to the instructions and that probably did not help. What I find strange is that the inside of the TB barrels is always coated with a brown film of that sticky oil and gritty dust. Maybe the filter is good for air flow efficiency but actually not that great to keep out dirt, with or without the capture oil.

                        Another funny thing happened after I oiled it last time (again according to the instructions). Apparently the engine sucked in a lot of oil aerosol at initial startup and backfired with a mighty explosion that blew the filter off. At least nothing went off in flames.

                          I've done the whole 4th of July flame shit myself. It's Awesome! Well, most of the time anyway. One time it backfired so bad that the foam started burning. I reckoned it was a combination of the WD40 and the ether fast start shit that I had to use one very very cold morning at Willowsprings.

                          And now you know why I had to buy another... :-D

                          Edit: they're not good at filtering shit out. That's why they don't rob horsepower and also why I change the oil after every track event. And sometimes even the engine. :-D

                            Ha! I don't do much track nowadays (getting old?) but I am known to drive roads sane Seven drivers don't think or care about. I had to rebuild the engine a few years ago, just worn rings, cylinder walls, valve guides and bearings. Maybe these filters are crap indeed. Oh well, it has to last one more trip to NorCal and Oregon in August. Not enough time to build the airbox until then. But I have a plan to integrate the stacks with the box. If all works out should be a cool design. What would I do without CAD?
