  • Leased a Range Rover Evoque

    My trusty old Jag was starting to turn a bit... British on me. The headliner was coming loose, there was feathering in the front tires, and things in general were a bit Leyland-ish. Last week when my wife took off to school with the kids, only to return 3 minutes later with a fresh slew of *really* weird diagnostic codes, I decided that it was time.

    Since I these days work for Jaguar Land Rover, I used one of their programs to get a discount on a new Evoque Pure Plus that I leased. The car came in Zanzibar, aka Bronze, aka Diarrhea with a black interior and blacked out roof. See pic.

    Overall, well executed car with a few flaws. The flaws can be summarized in road noise and the lack of a 6 cyl engine.

    The bad
    The road noise, which has been noted by reviewers, is noticeably higher than I would expect for a car in this segment.

    The 4 cyl engine does its work well (see below). I do, however, miss the smoothness of my XC60's straight six. The engine simply goes RRRRRRRR when you floor it and the turbo spools up. I know that everybody are cutting cylinders to lessen parasitic loss and get better fuel consumption, but the engine has an irritating and intrusive sound when you fantasize that you are cruising Botswana, inspecting your plantations.

    The good
    Forgetting about the noise, the Ford Ecotec 2.0 turbo engine at 240hp, provides adequate power since the car is fairly light at 1600kg /3500 lbs. It cannot hold a candle to the 330hp of my Volvo (at 1900+ kg), but it is quite quick.

    The new 9 speed gearbox does its work very well. Paddle shifting is just a study in futility since you never know which gear you should choose. You just end up going "Ahh WTF. Let's do 7."
    The Interior is very well executed. The width-wise cramped rear seats don't bother me because (a) the majestic panoramic roof, spanning the entire length of the car opens up the cabin completely, and (b) it is the kids that will suffer in the back.

    I like the design of the car, both interior and exterior. And I don't care what you say, I've decided to like the color.

    The infotainment system and user overall user interface is complete and utter crap, but is still better than the majority of the competition. Since I am doing R&D in this area for JLR, I can just say that we are working on improving the situation.

    Bottom line
    Expensive, somewhat elegant, and compact, just like I want it. I can live with the flaws.

    Looks good to me, as you are getting a deal (sounds like), so what the hell? I call that color "root beer".

      I like the color. Now you just need to slam it and put some spinners on it.

      The funny thing is my wife goes " What is that car a Morgan ? " and I said "No that's a Caterham but there is a Morgan driving it " -delise

            Chris - There is a reason why I leased it...

            Even with their earlier history in mind, I think that JLR actually has a shot of getting their quality up now that they are out from under the thumb of Ford and their parts bin.

              Congratulations Magnus. This is a sensible buy. You like to fix things. It looks good in poop. Should be just the ticket.
