  • Sigh.

    totaled_volvo.jpg

Miwako and Freya in the car when somebody going in the other direction decided to make a left turn. ~30mph impact speed. Airbag deployed. No injuries apart from a few bruises. Car written off by AAA without even inspecting it.

    I really liked that car.

The V60 is coming in January - I may pre-order one of those.

Sorry to hear that and great that nobody got seriously hurt. Sometimes in the future we will write off cars when you kick the tires...

      Glad to hear no injuries.

Not sure if this is industry standard, but some insurance companies do an automatic total loss assessment if the air bags are blown.

Good to know about the V60 coming here. I was disappointed that they discontinued the V50 here in the States as we were considering replacing our '07 T5 with a new one. I think we'll have to take a look at the V60 when it comes along.

I spoke to Volvo in Santa Monica about pre-ordering a V60 R-Design, but they weren't entirely clear if I would get the old, twin turbo straight six that my Ex-XC60 had, or the new Super- & Turbo-charged four engine. Volvo are migrating from their six current engine families to a single four cylinder architecture for both their diesel and petrol engines. The initial reviews for the new, four pot T6 engine were not that great, with the supercharger making quite a bit of noise apparently.

If I understand it right, FWD V60 T6 will get the new engine, while AWD will get the old for a while longer. If that's the case, I will seriously considering getting one. If not, I need to test drive the four pot version before making up my mind.

Yeah, I saw that when I did a bit of web search. But it looks like only the base model is FWD and comes with the 2.0L 4-banger (along with a new 8-speed slush box). If you want either of the two higher output engines you get AWD with a 6-speed automatic. It also looks like paddle shift is an option with either gear box (standard on the T6 R-Design). According to the US Volvo site the base T5 FWD will get the new 2.0L turbo 4/8-speed automatic, the T5 AWD will get the 2.5L turbo 5/6-speed automatic (250BHp like in our present V50) and the R-Design T6 AWD will get the Polestar 3.0L turbo 6/6-speed automatic (324BHp).

Good to hear that everyone is OK! I liked the red Volvo and will miss seeing it parked in front of my house. No doubt it was an excellent Caterham tow vehicle.

I'm surprised you're not getting another of the same model. Roomy, good power, crash-worthy, and amazing stealth-like anti-theft properties as demonstrated on the Escondido blat.

O.K., look at some unrelated bright side. Right now the fresh wild caught Pacific salmon is selling at the local Chinese supermarkets at $2.00 a pound.
We just prepared a nice one as Gravlax for our Thanksgiving dinner appetizer.

I know has nothing to do with the accident and Gravlax is not really an old German tradition but I thought it might give you an idea how to cope.....

Jalopnik confirms what Ron says here

An inline 6 would be smooth too. Get one while you can?

Otherwise, the car is fugly, imo.

And according to this press release on Autoblog this morning, the Polestar addition is US bound.

Jesus. The Polestar edition has stiffer springs than R-design. I hope a kidney belt is included.

We'll get an offer from the total loss adjuster at AAA either tomorrow or Monday, then I'll know how much money I have to shop with.

It also turned out that the new BMW 328 sportwagon now tows 4000lbs. It has a bit of more luggage space than the V60, but a weaker engine (4 cyl). A loaded V60 R-Design platinum with extra Gravlax (which is a Swedish national dish that you shall keep your dirty German hands off, Gert), will cost the same as a somewhat skimpy 328.

                      /Magnus F.

What? We are celebrating one of the cultural achievements of the Swedish cuisine (the other one is I believe pancakes with pea soup) and you are complaining!

The pea soup you can keep, but the pancakes (or rather crepes) and the lax stay with me.

It looks like we are homing in on a V60 T6 R-Design with the platinum package. I'll see if I can get it in the polestar blue color scheme, just to liven things up a bit.

I'll head up to Volvo in Culver City and start the negotiations, which I am sure will be both short and painless. Not.

                            Wait a minute.

Pea soup is Danish (As in Andersen's in Buellton :-O)

                            Crepes are French

Lox are Jewish (Gravlax sounds like something you might get at the pharmacy after eating too much cheese and nothing else).

Lutefisk is Noooorveegian (I just thought I'd throw that in there for Brad, who's soon to be missed by the looks of the For Sale section)

                            Meatballs are Sveeedish

Finally, for the record, this Yank is having Prime Rib. Yum!

But back on topic... Have fun w/ the commies over there. Personally I think you should look at a 4 door Toyota Taco. The almighty and venerable Crusty is at 317,000 miles and still running like a raped ape!

Edit: the 4 banger 4 door one. 3 miles per gallon times 317,000 miles = real, send your kids to a 1/2 a year of college money.
