You were pretty far away from the track... just happened to be in the wrong place-wrong time.
These people said they were less than 5 feet away from the track after a jump... some said they could almost touch the trucks. Maybe a little Darwism going on.
I've been really close on many occasions and certainly was at risk at jumps before, it was part of my job
This one was actually a closer call than the one in the video. As you can see the wheels are pointed at me and that is where he went, fortunately there was a bit of an incline to my left and I was able to slide down the bank in the nick of time, had I not moved I would have been mowed down. We were actually shooting this for a print ad and a TV commercial and did the jump a number of times, this one the driver decided to add a little drama, he succeeded
Made a great ad though
This one, the car actually hit me and I was stuck on the hood, so I decided I might as well take some pictures while I was there :D
In all seriousness, this accident really sucks for all involved and my condolences to the families. It's really easy to get caught up in all the adrenaline of the moment and not realize you could get hurt.
It will likely damage the sport (and Rally too) in the US
