3000 lbs of towing capacity. That makes it a Saab replacement candidate. Is it available at all with a manual transmission?

You can get it with a manual with a flat 4-cylinder normally aspirated motor (168hp) and with the Turbo 4-cylinder (250hp) but the towing capacity goes down to 2700lbs

I am getting the LL Bean edition which has the flat 6 (250hp) and an automatic tranny ( I am turning in my man card) 3000lb towing capacity

My Caterham plus trailer is 2400lbs, which is more than the 2000 lbs the Saab is rated for. The weird thing is that the Swedish DOT has rated the exact same vehicle at 3500 lbs towing capacity.

You are free to borrow the trailer at any time. I would recommend installing a brake controller in the Subi since the trailer's own brakes takes quite a bit of load from those of the car. Not absolutely necessary though, since you can always coast down the Grapevine at 100+mph.

Subaru is abbreviated to "Subba" in Swedish, which coincidentally means "Bitch". This means that my wife ask me in the morning who will take the Bitch to work. Not that funny, but worth mentioning.

Hey Magnus, you remember I sold you the brake controller a while ago because I opted for the surge brakes (perceived simplicity). Was a bad idea. I had nothing but trouble with the slave cylinders seizing and finally replaced them with electric brakes. So, I bought another brake controller, the same type I sold you. Works pretty good, except that I now paid 30 bucks more :rolleyes:

But I would not want to tow with a "relatively" lightweight vehicle without trailer brakes. Actually I did coming back from Salt Lake City last year due to the seizing issue and it felt very queasy braking at speed with my Hyundai Santa Fe which is probably a bit heavier than the Volvo or the Subaru. May not be an issue with a Suburban, though. That said, my enclosed trailer weighs in at 3000 pounds with car inside.

Oh by the way.....if you are not so fixated on the Subi, I can really recommend the Santa Fe. The new model comes with a 3.5l 270 hp V6 and pretty good base equipment for 26k sticker price. I believe with optional tow package (tranny cooler and hitch) it can do 3500 pounds.

We had our Santa Fe with a measly 180hp 2.7l V6 since 2004. Tows the Seven perfectly well and we had only one recall to replace the internal door opener handles so that the peeling chrome does not cut our delicate fingers. Otherwise no breakdown or shop needs at all (not counting an accident). Maybe that 10-year warranty does not mean anything at all.

Actually, the towing possibility was just a nice benefit, primarily bought the car as a family/camera gear hauler and to go on road trips with some off roading and camping.
Plan is to put skid plates and some lights on it, and get a second set of wheels with some more gravel type tires. Wanted something I could take off road a couple of times a year without having to drive an SUV around the other 98% of the time.
