Just in case you are still looking for something to do on the holiday weekend.....

    Rosie and I are going for a 2-day mini-tour on 5/26-5/27:
    - Angeles Forest to Palmdale
    - Lake Elizabeth, Willow Springs, Tehachapi
    - Caliente-Bodfish Road, Kern River Valley
    - Mt. Road 50 to Fountain Springs, overnight in Delano (Best Western)
    - Jump across the central valley to McKittrick
    - Hwy 33 - Cerro Noroestre Rd. - Mil Potrero Rd.
    - Frazier Park to home on some back roads, maybe Pine Canyon.

The whole thing is not too far, maybe 500 miles.

    Any interest?

    Gert

I would like to go with you probably as far as Kernville on Saturday, then I might go home via 178 through Kennedy Meadows. I already have plans for Sunday (father-in-law is turning 80!). We can meet at Mt. Emma Rd/Angeles Forrest?

      Stan

      edit - I couldn't find M50, did you mean M56?

          Stan,
M50 is the extension/connection of the M56 to the Kern River valley.

Mt. Emma Rd. junction would be a good meeting point. Maybe around 9:30 am?
As for Kennedy Meadows: You mean at the Sherman Pass Road? I was not aware that you can drive this in anything but a Wrangler or Humvee?

          Doug, which part?

          Gert

P.S.: Got new cam seals in, bearing cap split sealed and now I just need to get my cams adjusted and waiting for the new valve cover gasket to arrive. Let's see if that stops the oil leak....

Oops, I was wrong about where Kennedy Meadows is located. The 178 is the route I might return home on, not Sherman Pass. I think you did this road last year?

Yes, 9:30am would be fine at Mt. Emma Rd. junction.

Yes, I did 178 last year from Kernville and went from there on Red Rock Randsburg Road to back to the 395. The latter is quite a detour but I wanted to get the famous Cheeseburger at the old Saloon in Randsburg (was closed...). Might also be a scorcher in the desert at this time of the year.

I've driven by Randsburg many times on the way up 395 to Reno, but I've never stopped. Maybe I will this time. Cheeseburgers and beer? Yes, maybe I'll stop.

I have to work that weekend in order to make up for the time off I'm taking the following weekend. Gert, any chance you could get some bolts that Doug (if you decide to go that is Doug) has for me?

Sure....they are not M30x500 bolts, are they? I can drop them off when I come home

Stan, I think Randsburg is worth a side trip (only a few miles from 395, don't need to take the long road from Red Rock). Old, run down mining town with an antique shop or two, a church and that saloon which used to be (or still is?) a bikers hangout. I had the Cheeseburger last time there I guess in '95 and maybe it was not really as good as I remember but the saloon was quite cool with all the old junk. But last year we got there late in the morning, just too early.

                      Gert

Ah, found it. I did not know that it is even called a "Randsburger"

So Doug, can you make it? I drove the back roads home from Visalia yesterday (not in my Birkin though), and Bodfish-Caliente Road is my new favorite! It should be even better in a Seven as long as the happy California cows stay off the road. Besides the cows and a few motorcyclists, I had the road to myself from Bodfish to the Hwy 58.

I won't know if I can make it until later in the week.

I won't be able to make the drive tomorrow.

                            Perhaps the next one.
