Ah yes this brings back memories of Buttonwillow '07 when a guy in a "big" car passed me, spun at the apex and took the LR corner off my car as I drove by. I was wearing Chris Carter's helmet so no damage done to the noggin.

Another thing to watch for with the faster straight line cars is for them to squeak past just before the turn and then spin right in front of you.

Not too bad if they just go off track but sometimes they end up coming into your line giving you an opptunity to T bone them back. Caterham still loses.

I remember watching a race on TV where a Viper was doing just about exactly what you experienced. It would blow by other cars in a straight line but then have to brake waaay before the others in order to get around a given corner. Not surprisingly, over the course of the race the brakes got worse and worse until it went in deep and never came out. :-P

All power (it uses a truck engine) and tire contact patch and nothing else, a crude car preferred by crude people by and large. I'd like to drive one! :D

Yeah, well. There it is. I'm sure it's a wonderful track.

Realizing everybody knows this, I'll remind everyone that 7 drivers do *not* want to get hit by a Viper (or any car for that matter). The Viper is a big heavy car, ones whose brakes are no match for its engine. And this can be said for their drivers, as evidenced by your (and my) experience. Generally their ego and aggressiveness vastly exceeds their judgment and talent.

Sounds like you ran into (figuratively speaking) a king sized, stinking turd. This is one of the reasons I like NASA. If some dickhead engages in that kind of shit they get thrown right out after being chastised in front of the entire group. Did you say anything to the asshole?

Had a fun time this weekend. It was good to see Nigel and meet Marcell (?). The weather was a bit chilly, and the track damp early in the day, but the afternoons were just right!

I was thrown out mid-afternoon on the second day for being loud and obnoxious, so I wasn't allowed to run in the final race. I got the best time in the qualifying race, though. There was a Viper who was driving way past his limits that just about T-boned me a few times. I'd pass him, and then he'd dive bomb the inside of the next corner, tires smoking and sliding, so I'd back off and let him through. After the third time he did this, I was able to put some distance between us and left him a safe distance back. Until I got the pumpkin a lap before the finish!

Overall a very fun weekend, but I will have to work on a different exhaust if I go again.

I did have to have a modified exhaust made last time I went to Laguna Seca, but my car is relatively loud. I fortunately found a shop close by, so I was able to be back on track by early afternoon after failing sound.

I bet someone could make a good living just having a muffler shop outside the entrance!

It's a hell of a long pull for (very possibly) bad weather & (definitely) getting thrown off of the track because of the noise Nazis looking after the wishes of the trust fund class.

    No thanks.

I am in Europe that week.

Not exactly cheap but I would really go there sometimes.

I just signed up for the Race Group for both days, which I believe is now full. Should be plenty of room in the other groups.

I think I am going to have to work that weekend, but I will try to trade with someone. I love Laguna Seca. Last time I was there I had to have a new muffler made to pass the sound test, and even then I couldn't use full throttle up the back stretch.

I signed up for the point by passing group. I'm still not sure if I'll take the Caterham though. We'll see. I'll need a better roll bar, 5-point harness (mine's 4-point), and I'm not sure it'll pass the 90db test. Plenty of time I guess but the crossflow is STILL not put back together.

I don't fancy running the Boxster again so I'm considering renting something interesting instead. Anyone have any info on track car rental up there?

AROSC tells me they generally sell out Laguna Seca quickly.

So far only one entry in HPDE, the rest are in the race group. I misread it the other day. The Race entries look to be mostly AROSC members.

    Hi Doug,

This sounds great. If I'm back from our Christmas trip by then, I'll be there.
