  • 'Cars and Coffee' March 8

Martin from Ventura and I are planning to attend this Saturday's 'Cars and Coffee' event in Irvine. The theme this weekend is British cars. 'Cars and Coffee' is the continuation of the old Crystal Cove event. Everyone shows up about 7am and its all over by 9am. Even if you don't bring your Seven, its worthwhile just to spectate! Details here:

    Anyone else want to go?

edit - Here is the announce off the web site:

    BRITISH CAR DAY
    Winter Version

    AT CARS AND COFFEE
7905 Gateway Blvd., Irvine, CA 92618
    At the Ford Design Center

WILL BE SATURDAY, MARCH 08, 2008

    From our friends at Ford:
“Ford will have their top design executives from Ford worldwide coming here for a design review in March. Several of them are coming from England, and are keen enthusiasts of the cars we all love -- Healeys, Triumphs, Jaguars, Morgans, etc. We'd like the date for British Cars Day to be Saturday, March 8, and we will invite the design execs to come in for the weekend to join Cars & Coffee. I'm sure they will provide lots of interesting conversation for the participants!”

And a Second 2008 British Car Day!
THE SPRING BRITISH CAR DAY AT CARS AND COFFEE WILL BE SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2008.

If my car is street legal enough I will try to get it down to Irvine on Saturday. I know that Ken Andersen from Cosworth plans to be there with is Cortina.

        Sorry. Will not make it.

It turned out that the car just fired on two cylinders (which was obvious once it was revved). This probably stems from the fact that the Cosworth cams were installed rotated 180 degrees in comparison with the stock Duratec cams. We still need to figure out the firing order to make the ECU drive this config.

The clutch is also going all British on me by pissing hydraulic oil on the floor. Engine out...

Magnus, sorry to hear about the problems!

I still plan to go although I woke up with a cold/cough this morning. A 90 mile drive in 40 degree temps in an open car is what a doctor would recommend anyway, right?

Is that 180آ؛ of camshaft turning or of crankshaft turning?

What about trying the old style coil pack instead of the coil on plug? This uses a wasted spark so it fires two cylinders every power stroke.

            Just to get it debugged.

If you need help with the engine R&R let me know. I promise to leave the smoke at home.

              Thread hijack...

The cams are 180 degrees off.

I run the ECU with the cam sensor off, thus forcing the ECU to 360 degree mode where it fires the injectors and the coils at both the power and exhaust stroke.

From an ignition point of view, this is identical to wasted spark. The injectors will fire at the intake stroke as they should, but also on a closed inlet valve during the exhaust stroke. This fuel will be sucked into the engine during the next inlet stroke together with the fuel from the injector. Although it wastes a few percent of fuel, it is a very easy way to get an engine up and running. (All production engines with injectors and no cam sensor operates in this way.)

I spoke to Cosworth this morning, and they said the firing sequence is still 1-3-4-2, with the cam sensor lobe's 180 degree rotation being the only difference.

When I get home I will remove the injector rail and check that I actually have fuel. The spark plugs fire as they should. I will then disconnect #2 and #3 and try to get the engine to fire on #1 and #4. My neighbors will love the backfiring.

              /Magnus F.
