Hi I've just joined so thought I'd say 'hello'! I also have a bit of a long shot question...

Has anyone put an electric motor in a Caterham?

Yes, I know, it's sacrilege ... I have owned two Caterhams, including an early 90s HPC. I've also raced (single seaters and tin tops) around most UK tracks, Spa and Nurburgring, so fear not, I'm a dedicated petrolhead! But now I've just moved to California from the UK I'm intrigued and might even try it as an experiment. Any idea?

Also, when's the next event/get together? It would be great to come along, see the cars and meet a few of you.

Finally, there don't seem to be any used Caterhams for sale - I've looked on the site and the forum. Is the only way to build one yourself from a new kit (which I'm up for) or do any pre-owned cars get bought and sold complete?

Sorry for all the naive questions. Any help welcome. Cheers for now,

Yesterday I started fitting the my Tillet seats and ran into trouble with the crotch strap.

The strap starts at the lap belt mounts, goes under the Tillet seat and through the hole where your private Seven (inches) has a tendency to fall down when you are driving naked.

I tried to pass the strap from its seat belt mount, between the runner and the seat (which are separated by a couple of spacers and through the hole. The problem with this is that the bracket used to adjust the strap gets all bunched up between the seat belt mount and the seat itself.

Should I try to move the bracket so that it resides under the seat on the part of the strap that is between the runner and the hole, or is there a smarter way of routing it?

We finished our home remodel so I have finally brought the Seven home. I did a little bit of work on it over the weekend and again this evening:

1) Removed the old 10" wide steel wheels and tires
2) Removed the Spridget rear axle and installed a proper TR-10 with LSD reworked by Chris Beebe

3) Installed a set or Revolutions with Yoko A008s (the tires came with the rims)
4) Installed the rear fenders
5) Installed the windshield
6) Installed the headlamp bulbs - I have to have the car inspected to get it registered
7) Installed a set of windshield wipers
8) Installed 7/16" dia front wheel studs to match the rears
9) Removed a couple of added on aluminum panels and found the original Lotus data plate with s/n
10) Tonight I loaded the car back onto the trailer to go for a DMV inspection tomorrow (if I can get away from work by 3:30):

11) Hooked up a battery and found that the starter motor would spin the engine over
12) Did a compression check:

Note: I poured a bunch of Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder last October after I towed it back from the original owner's place. Tonight I spun it over for a while with the plugs removed before I checked the compression and let the excess oil blow out the plug holes. All 4 cylinders showed 240 - 245 psi. Even if my gauge is completely whacked at least the compression is even across the board. Maybe I'll make enough progress to try to light it off this weekend.

I want a Seven with a Honda engine

I am an NCO in the US Army and I have a passion for sports cars. I have in the last two years been thinking and dreaming about building a Superlite...

I am an NCO in the US Army and I have a passion for sports cars. I have in the last two years been thinking and dreaming about building a Superlite roadster of some kind. I originally wanted an exocar in the style of the Ariel Atom but I am now fairly sure I want to go the Caterham route instead.

Now for my questions, and I greatly apologize if they are repeats but I did look around and do my research before asking these;

1: How many pounds does a finished Roadsport SV weigh? (with heater, carpet, weather package, the works)

2: Has any one used a Honda K20 (the 2.0 liter engine in the Ariel Atom and in the Civic Si) or Honda K24 (2.4 liter in the Acura TSX) in one of these cars? And if not, why not?

I am much more familiar with Honda engines and with modifying and tuning them. I am also quite certain that more power can be reliably brought out of these than any Ford four banger could ever conjure forth. My 2009 Civic Si for example has a 2.4 liter engine that produces 275hp and 210 lb-ft at the wheels, NA, and uses a wonderful close ratio limited slip differential 6-speed transmission. My setup is typically referred to in the Honda tuning scene as the K24/K20 "Frankenstein" setup, as it uses parts from both engines.

I would choose this Japanese engine setup without hesitation over the British engines or the Ford ones if I was certain it would work. Many Lotus Elise and Exige owners also swap out their Toyota Celica engines for Honda Civic engines and I know it works great.

The only thing I could see getting in the way personally is that the Honda K- series engines may be to tall for the space in a Caterham. Also it is a FWD engine, not sure if that is a problem or not?

Thanks guys!

I have been looking at seven ownership for a while. I have some questions that maybe experts at this forum can help answer:

1) How hard is the suspension - especially the old solid axle since I probably cannot afford CSR? Would it knock my teeth out and rattle my brain on a long road trip (3 hour - 4 hours)?

2) What can I get for 30k or below? I would like to have a Roadsport SV if I can - so I can get heater, weather package, windscreen with wiper. I have no plans to build one so only one I can presumably afford with 30k is used one - how can I tell the relative value of used caterham since there is no KBB?

Thanks in advance!!!

This is Birkin specific, but maybe you Caterhamistas know how to do this, anyway:

I found a front bearing a bit lose and when opening saw a lot of rust in the grease, probably water got in there. Took it all out and ordered new bearings but the inner/larger bearing race baffles me. How do I pull this out of the aluminum hub? It is completely recessed and I can barely get a fingernail behind the inner edge.

The outer bearing race should not be a problem (I hope) since it has a protruding ledge that i can get to with a brass punch.

Thanks
